The other day in class Karisa Tashjian from Providence Public Library came and talked to the class about the Providence Public Library. Also, what they provided for everyone between youth and for adults too. She is the Education Director of the library. She sounds like she is very dedicated to the youth that she works with and creating classes for adults/youth. She supports birth through adults in hope for them to explore accessible learning opportunities. She created programs for everyone to learn or to enjoy the library that services that have been created. An example was the free classes you can sign up for like coding or knitting. These different programs or class are funded by 21 st -century programs and other funders too.           21st century and others have funded some or all of the programs. She talked about other types of funds that the program receives. This connects ...

Against Philanthropy

Image
The central argument of this article is philanthropy, but also the main critiques of the nonprofit sector and funding. Jenny Price wrote about how they are getting big donations from huge corporations to the organization but by the being said, they are receiving tax write-offs in return. I like how Price put in the article how “The average major U.S. corporation maximizes profits as its primary goal while paying more limited attention to social and environmental consequences.” This shows that the companies aren’t paying any attention to the issues like; having vaccinations or refusing medication.    For example, the use is to help like, “In the Niger Delta, a $218 million Gates Foundation program provides polio and measles vaccinations.” Then the different organizations start to create more problem that links to the different cause of having polio and the measles. These examples show how nonprofits are fixing something but not the problem at hand. ( I’m going to b...

Reflect on Emails

What do these letters have in common? They all have one thing in mind and it is asking donations. Also, it all through an email and not a hand writes letters. What are the big differences? The biggest difference is the format of each email of how they want you to see how important they need the donations. Also, you can see in each email they have included or emphasized what they want us to look at in their email. For example, three of the emails has a picture to portray what they want us to look at, so we can see why we are donating. One using bold text for people to see how important the message is getting across. What tools do the organizations use to persuade the reader to donate? think using different ways to persuade the donors is important. Like using charts, or pictures, or even the layout to show how your nonprofit organization works. Most importantly I feel like I learned this in high school graphic design class but it all about how its appealing to the eye and how...

SNOW DAY!!!!!!!!

In a summary I believe, “The Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative” is a summer program that helps to provide some academic skills to keep up, so the children don’t lose any skills when school starts. They want to make sure to that the programs are hand on to ensure an enriched/ excited program during the summer. Also, more than 1,100 children and youth are being served in 14 programs in 10 communities across the state of Rhode Island by HSLI. They are addressing the problem by helping the student retain information and skills that they have learned in school. Therefore, the problem that student won’t be able to remember or lost the skills set won’t be a problem if they just join the 6-week program that’s in the summer. I think that this 6-week program, this aligns with purposeful play and care. ·         The children are learning through play different activities, but also it helps bridging the achievement gap. ·      ...

The Rhode Island Foundation

The mission statement of The Rhode Island Foundation is; “The Rhode Island Foundation is a proactive community and philanthropic leader dedicated to meeting the needs of the people of Rhode Island.” This foundation was founded in 1916 and is the nation’s oldest and largest community foundations. Also, they are the largest funder of Rhode Island’s nonprofit sectors, which also means it’s the only community foundation too. There is a quote that the founders wrote, “There is a growing belief that the charitable problems of each generation can better be, and should be, solved by the best minds of each generation.” It doesn’t really say who donate or where the money comes from. It’s more like who they donate to and what kind of funds there are in the foundation. Here are a few of their grant programs: ·         Barrington District Nursing Association Fund: Supports programs that ensure the physical and mental health and well-being of Barrington re...

PLAYBOX: Being Silly

Image
Playbox: BEING SILLY My story time:  Why Haley and I chose this specific project of puppets for being silly. When we decided the puppets because we found that they are very essential to child care. These puppets that we made are not only for play, but it’s talking to children by expressing your emotions. Also, They help make the environment more light in tough situations like how Rachel mention in our Playbox. When doing those puppets, it leads to a conversation that can help everyone relate. When creating the puppets we can have different race/ ethnicity by expressing the way they are making them. My experience planning out : To tell you the truth Haley did most of the planning; this activity took her five minutes to plan. So, when I asked her what you would like me to do? She asked me to gather materials and also look at the presentation she has created But also is why if it was the best activity to do for being silly . It was fun finding different ...
