Guest Speaker
The other day in class Karisa Tashjian from Providence Public
Library came and talked to the class about the Providence Public Library. Also,
what they provided for everyone between youth and for adults too. She is the Education
Director of the library. She sounds like she is very dedicated to the youth
that she works with and creating classes for adults/youth. She supports birth
through adults in hope for them to explore accessible learning opportunities. She
created programs for everyone to learn or to enjoy the library that services
that have been created. An example was the free classes you can sign up for
like coding or knitting. These different programs or class are funded by 21st-century programs and other
funders too.
21st century
and others have funded some or all of the programs. She talked about other
types of funds that the program receives. This connects to grants and funding
in this class.
There was
one thing that she made, and it really resonated with me was that she creates the
learning lounge. She said this has been creating
in other states and it showed me how it has impacted everyone. Without the
different programs she is running, there
wouldn’t be anyone interested in the Providence Public Libraries and others.
I like that
she had a PowerPoint but did not go to
the PowerPoint. The conversations went off topic and she was more than happy to
allow that to happen. She also had a few handouts that were talked about with statistics about funding, different
programs, and an organizational chart.
